Selling a Car With Title Issues in Alberta

First, the big one: Alberta has no vehicle “title.” Once you know that, most “title problems” have a clear fix.

Alberta does not issue a vehicle “title.” Your proof of ownership is the bill of sale, supported by documents such as a previous registration or probate papers — and the registration certificate proves registration, not ownership. Most “title issues” in Alberta are really ownership-document problems, and each has a clear path to selling.

Lost registration or paperwork

If you cannot find your documents, bring photo ID and the VIN to any registry agent to obtain replacement records and confirm the vehicle is in your name. Once ownership is established, you can complete a bill of sale and sell the car. A cash-for-cars buyer can tow the vehicle while you tidy up the records.

An outstanding loan or lien

A lien is recorded in Alberta’s Personal Property Registry (PPR) and stays attached to the vehicle until the debt is paid and the lienholder discharges it. A buyer can search the PPR by VIN, and a legitimate buyer will not take a vehicle with an active lien. Pay out and discharge the loan before selling, or arrange the payout as part of the sale, so ownership transfers clean.

An out-of-province vehicle

An Out-of-Province Vehicle Inspection (OPVI) is required to register a vehicle from another province or country in Alberta. It is not required to sell or scrap a vehicle. So if you are simply selling or disposing of an out-of-province car, an OPVI does not apply — it only matters when someone wants to register and drive it in Alberta.

An inherited vehicle

Ownership of a deceased person’s vehicle transfers at a registry agent using estate documents — typically a grant of probate (if there is a will) or letters of administration. These act as proof of authority over the vehicle. Once ownership is settled, you can complete a bill of sale and sell or scrap it like any other car.
