Alberta Vehicle Bill of Sale

A bill of sale is what records the change of ownership in Alberta. Here is exactly what to put on it — and the mistakes that delay a transfer.

An Alberta vehicle bill of sale is a signed document that records the sale of a vehicle from one party to another. Because Alberta has no separate certificate of title, the bill of sale is your proof of ownership and the document the buyer uses to register the vehicle.

What to include

A complete Alberta bill of sale lists:

  • The full names and addresses of both the seller and the buyer.
  • The VIN (the 17-character vehicle identification number).
  • The vehicle’s year, make, model, and colour.
  • The sale price.
  • The signatures of both parties (and the date).
  • The odometer reading — recommended, and good practice to record.

The standard form

Alberta provides a free standard bill of sale, sometimes referenced as form ARP006 (printed form number REG3126), available through Alberta.ca. You are not required to use that exact form — a registry agent will accept any bill of sale that contains the information above — but the standard form is a simple way to make sure nothing is missed.

Common mistakes

  • A wrong VIN. The registry matches the VIN to its records, so one incorrect character can cause the transfer to be rejected. Copy it carefully from the vehicle, not from memory.
  • Leaving out the colour. It is a required detail that is easy to overlook.
  • A missing signature or date. Both parties must sign.
  • Adding tax. There is no PST in Alberta and private sales are generally GST-exempt, so do not add tax to the price.

Alberta bill of sale — FAQ

A bill of sale is how ownership is recorded and what the buyer needs to register the vehicle, so in practice you need one. Alberta provides a standard form (ARP006 / REG3126), but a registry will accept any bill of sale that contains the required details. Keep a signed copy for your records.

It should list both parties’ full names and addresses, the VIN, the vehicle’s year, make, model and colour, the sale price, and the signatures of both buyer and seller. Recording the odometer reading is recommended. Missing the colour or a signature is a common reason a transfer is delayed.

The registry matches the VIN on the bill of sale to its records, so a single wrong character can cause the transfer to be rejected. Copy the 17-character VIN carefully from the dash or door jamb — not from memory — and double-check it against the registration before both parties sign.

No. Alberta has no provincial sales tax, and a private sale between individuals is generally not subject to GST. You do not add tax to the sale price on the bill of sale. GST typically applies only when the seller is a dealer or other GST registrant.
